Migrant Equity Southeast is calling on the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System to address the urgent need for investing in Hispanic and Spanish-speaking families through increased language access and support.

In partnership with NYU Metro Center, Migrant Equity Southeast released a report highlighting the need for the school district to improve educational outcomes for Hispanic students, who have grown by 66% over the past decade and now represent 12% of the district's population.

Daniella Rodriguez, executive director of Migrant Equity Southeast, said one key area of improvements is the school system's communication as many parents report relying on their children to translate.

"Children should not have to be the one doing the interpretation," Rodriguez asserted. "For example, if you have been failing at class, or you have not been showing up, how can we trust a child to properly communicate that if it's not in their favor?"

The survey, conducted with more than 150 parents of Hispanic and English Language Learner students, revealed more than half were dissatisfied with parent-school communication and had to rely on their children to translate two-thirds of the time in discussions related to school matters.

Among the key recommendations are hiring and compensating bilingual staff, providing cultural sensitivity training, engaging parents through hands-on methods, and developing family outreach programs. Rodriguez noted they also want to see more funding allocated to the English as a Second Language program in upcoming budgets.

"SSCPS can step up. Don't just tell us that you are committed to do better for the diverse students, show us in numbers," Rodriguez urged. "Show us in the budget that, more than being committed, you're willing to allocate more funding for these families."

The report shows only 69% of English Language Learners graduating from high school compared with 88% of all students, and by improving the language barriers and experience for English Language Learner students Rodriguez hopes to boost these numbers.
