Los habitantes de Indiana están reelaborando los presupuestos mensuales a medida que finaliza la pausa para los pagos de préstamos estudiantiles federales y comienza el estrés de otro gasto mensual. Más de 900.000 prestatarios en Indiana y 40 millones en todo el país tienen hasta octubre para resolverlo. De acuerdo con Education Data Initiative, el prestatario promedio en Indiana tiene más de $30.000 en deuda de préstamos estudiantiles. Brian Walsh es un gerente certificado de planificación financiera de SoFi. Él dice que cada vez que comienzas a hacer algo que no has hecho durante mucho tiempo, genera incertidumbre y ansiedad.

"En términos generales, alentamos a las personas a que se aseguren de entender qué préstamos tienen después de tres años y medio de no pagarlos. Averigue si pueden o no pagar los pagos que están comenzando de nuevo, y luego decida que es lo más importante y realmente obtenga el mejor consejo para pagar sus préstamos estudiantiles," reiteró el entrevistado.

Walsh asegura que aunque la Corte Suprema falló en contra de la condonación de préstamos estudiantiles, cree que el asunto aun se puede resolver. El presidente Joe Biden anunció un camino alternativo para perdonar algunos préstamos bajo la Ley de Educación Superior.

Walsh explica una opción que los prestatarios pueden elegir, que basa los pagos mensuales en los ingresos.

"Esencialmente, los planes de pago basados en los ingresos limitan su pago a un porcentaje de sus ingresos discrecionales, por lo que se excluye una mayor parte de los ingresos de alguien en ese cálculo. Será mucho más generoso para los estudiantes prestatarios que las otras opciones disponibles," insistió también Walsh.

Otras opciones incluyen planes de pago de graduados extendidos o préstamos de refinanciamiento para extender los períodos de pago y reducir las cantidades mensuales.
