Experts: Medicaid expansion vital for Alabama's health, economy

In recent years, Alabama has faced a critical need for Medicaid expansion due to ongoing struggles with the state's health care system.

Approximately 300,000 people find themselves in a coverage gap, where they earn too much for Medicaid but still cannot afford private insurance.

Debbie Smith, Cover Alabama campaign director for the group Alabama Arise, said a lack of Medicaid funding is impacting critical health care infrastructure.

"We've had about eight rural hospitals close since 2010," Smith pointed out. "A recent report commissioned by the Alabama Hospital Association also shows that 33% of rural hospitals are at immediate risk of closure, with 50% of rural hospitals being at closure total."

She argued by expanding Medicaid coverage, Alabama can reduce the suffering of people who lack health care, drive economic growth, and address the state's high maternal and infant mortality rates. Data from Community Catalyst and United for Respect said the issue is even more important as 61,000 people are at risk of being removed from Alabama's Medicaid rolls.

Smith stressed Medicaid expansion and the resulting reimbursement funding is crucial to helping more people enter and stay in the workforce. State data show closing Alabama's coverage gap could generate more than 20,000 jobs and may help keep the doors open at home health agencies, one of which was recently forced to close.

"They cited Medicaid as the reason they're shutting their doors and they're laying off 785 people in the state," Smith reported. "So obviously that's a big issue for the patients that they serve, but also that's a lot of jobs that we're losing because our state hasn't done the right thing."

Smith added Arise's Cover Alabama campaign is calling on lawmakers to close the health coverage gap and invest in a healthier future for the state and its residents. Alabama is one of just 10 states where workers lack access to quality, affordable health care due to limited Medicaid coverage.
