Make smart health coverage choices during open enrollment

The open enrollment period for health insurance can seem daunting to many Arizonans, so experts recommend starting sooner rather than later to do your homework.

James McGuffin, assistant director of the Arizona Department of Insurance and Financial Institutions, said the key is to make sure you understand the product you're buying. He noted actual insurance policies come with state protections other similar but "non-insurance products" do not offer. He also recommended looking at every aspect of the coverage, not just the premium cost.

"Because many times, coverage that offers the lowest premium in the long run might not be the best value," McGuffin cautioned. "Because you have things to consider like coverage limitations, deductibles, and those types of things can all add to the cost of insurance coverage down the road."

McGuffin acknowledged finding the best coverage can be challenging and complex, but there are people to assist. Navigators and certified application counselors can help people with questions, at no cost.

Dr. Rhonda Randall, chief medical officer of Employer and Individual for UnitedHealthcare, suggested people take the time to learn the basic insurance jargon. Her company has developed an online tool, called Just Plain Clear, which she describes as a glossary explaining terms and information you might need when shopping for health coverage.

"Things like deductibles, copays, coinsurance, premiums, etc.," Randall outlined. "Be familiar with what those terms are and what the costs associated with each one is for the plans that you're offered or the plans that you're considering."

Randall added for people on Medicare, a similar resource is called Medicare Made Clear.

Randall pointed out for employee-sponsored coverage, open enrollment can span a couple of weeks between September and December. If you're Medicare-eligible, the open enrollment period runs annually from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7.
