More than 1 million North Carolinians, including college students, are grappling with food insecurity. Recognizing the urgent need, schools like William Peace University have established on-campus food pantries to bridge the gap.

Jill Gattone, director of health services for William Peace University, highlighted the growing demand for food resources, which she said became evident during the peak of the pandemic, and continues to increase.

"We really saw a need in our student population," Gattone explained. "We just felt like students shouldn't have to worry about classes, fitting in, having community, and also having to worry about going hungry."

She pointed out the school's Pacer Pantry has served more than 500 students so far, providing them with shelf-stable foods and basic items. According to a 2021 Hope Survey report, almost 30% of students at four-year universities and about 40% of students at two-year colleges face basic support needs.

The survey also revealed the combination of food insecurities and college stress can lead to lower completion rates and an increased likelihood of depression.

Jenna Rae, coordinator of the university's Wellness Center, noted another layer to the issue is students can sometimes be reluctant to ask for help because of the stigma surrounding pantry visits. She explained one way they try to overcome it is by creating a confidential process with an order form.

"I think that's always just like the way we should go about it," Rae said. "To always lead with kindness and go for the thing that's going to break down barriers rather than build those barriers so that students can succeed."

She added in the future they hope more students can lean on the wellness center for the support they need. There have been efforts to combat collegiate hunger in North Carolina. In 2021, a Hunger Free Campus Initiative was introduced and 10 other states have passed bills to improve college students' access to food.
