Los riesgos de hambre infantil aumentan drásticamente cuando los comedores escolares cierran durante el verano, especialmente para una de cada ocho familias que actualmente enfrentan inseguridad alimentaria en Oregon.

David Wieland, de Partners for a Hunger-Free Oregon, afirma que en la próxima sesión, los legisladores tienen la oportunidad de garantizar que todos los niños del estado tengan acceso a alimentos nutritivos a través de un programa de verano EBT, que ya es permanente, la gobernadora Tina Kotek lo ha calificado de prioritario.

"Ahora solo necesitamos que los legisladores de Oregon financien la administración de Summer EBT, porque este programa tendrá un gran impacto en más de 300,000 niños en Oregon este Verano," explica Wieland.

Oregón ayudó a dar forma al nuevo programa de forma piloto durante la última década. Las familias que cumplan los requisitos recibirán $40 por niño al mes para alimentos comprados en establecimientos que atiendan a beneficiarios de SNAP. Algunos críticos de los programas de asistencia, incluidos los aumentos de los beneficios de SNAP durante la emergencia de salud pública, han afirmado que impiden que las personas se reincorporen a la fuerza laboral y pueden conducir a la dependencia del gobierno.


La mayoría de las familias que califican para el EBT de verano tienen empleos, pero ganan menos del 185% del nivel federal de pobreza, alrededor de 39,000 dólares al año para una familia de cuatro miembros.

Jacki Ward Kehrwald, también de Partners for a Hunger-Free Oregon, dice que el programa ha disfrutado durante mucho tiempo del apoyo bipartidista.

"Todos los niños de Oregon merecen tener las mismas oportunidades de prosperar," asegura Kehrwald. "E independientemente de lo que ocurra en sus vidas, merecen tener alimentos nutritivos y accesibles que los preparen para el éxito en el próximo curso escolar."

Se espera que Summer E-B-T devuelva a Oregon 35 millones de dólares de impuestos federales cada verano, y cubre todas las prestaciones alimentarias y la mitad de los costos administrativos. Wieland señala que con cada dólar de prestaciones alimentarias federales se genera hasta $1.80 de actividad económica.

"Entonces, según la cantidad de niños elegibles, Oregon podría ver un impacto económico de alrededor de $53 a $64 millones con Summer EBT para el verano de 2024," agrega Kehrwald.
