Polls consistently show Michigan as a critical battleground in this year's presidential election, with more than 8.3 million registered voters in the swing state. In response, voting-rights group Stand Up America is focusing its "Supreme Court Voter" campaign on the Great Lakes State.

The group emphasizes that the next president could appoint up to four new justices, potentially reshaping the court for decades -- especially on issues such as abortion, gun laws and voting.

Sarah Harris, deputy communications director and press secretary for Stand Up America, calls voting "critical."

"When we're voting, we're voting for ourselves, or maybe we're voting for a candidate but we're also voting for others. We're voting for our kids and all of the people in the future of our families for decades to come," she explained.

Michigan used to consistently vote Democrat, after supporting Republicans in the 1970s and 80s. But, like neighboring Wisconsin, it became a key battleground state after Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton in 2016.

Joe Biden won Michigan back from Trump in 2020.

Harris highlighted the results of a recent Stand Up America survey, revealing that about 75% of voters see the appointment and confirmation of new Supreme Court justices as a decisive factor in their choices for president and U.S. Senate this November.

Harris believes this underscores the critical impact of the upcoming election on the future direction of the high court.

"Who will be the person putting new, younger justices on the court? We have four justices in their 70s and we don't know what will happen. We don't know how long they'll be able to serve for whatever reason, and so this next election is really important," she continued.

Harris added that voters should not feel like their fundamental freedoms can be bought and sold. She believes Supreme Court justices should have the same ethical standards that everyone in Congress and all the other judges around the country have.
