School teachers and staff members, nurses and health care workers from around the nation are meeting in Houston this week for the American Federation of Teachers national convention.

Toni Malone, a kindergarten teacher in the Bastrop Independent School District in Central Texas, is attending the convention for the first time. She said she is looking forward to learning from her counterparts from other states.

"Being able to meet teachers from other places and see, first of all you're not alone," Malone explained. "But then also getting ideas about how other people are addressing issues in education."

Malone noted she is concerned about the number of veteran teachers who are leaving the profession because of low wages and a poor work-life balance. Some state and national politicians are slated to speak at the convention, which runs through Wednesday.

Malone added those in attendance are already advocating for public schools.

"We need the [Senator] Ted Cruzes of the world to be in the building, so that they can look us in the face, listen to our voices and tell us their side of the story, too," Malone asserted. "What's going on? Why don't you stand on public education?"

The union also represents school support personnel, from bus drivers to paraeducators, as well as higher education staff, health care workers and public employees in some states.

Randi Weingarten, president of the federation, during her address to the crowd, championed the importance of paid parental leave, smaller class sizes and making schools safe for children.

"Public schools are essential to our children's future and to our democracy," Weingarten contended. "Every public school should be a place where families want to send their children, educators want to work and all students thrive."
