Los cuidadores domiciliarios de Washington están negociando con el estado sobre salarios y beneficios. El sindicato de cuidadores, SEIU 775, está en conversaciones con Consumer Direct Care Network de Washington a través de la Consumer Directed Employer Rate Setting Board.

Nelly Prieto es cuidadora y miembro de la junta ejecutiva de SEIU 775. Ella dice que los trabajadores de atención domiciliaria están luchando con el costo de vida y la inflación, que se multiplica cuando luchan por conseguir 40 horas de trabajo.

"Si no tenemos eso, independientemente de lo que nos paguen, es difícil para nosotros sobrevivir con algo así," expresó Prieto.

SEIU 775 busca garantizar salarios de al menos $25 por hora, cobertura médica continua y asequible incluso cuando las horas de un cuidador varían de mes a mes, un aumento en los beneficios de jubilación, más tiempo libre remunerado y reembolso de millas. La próxima reunión del Consumer Directed Employer Rate Setting Board es el lunes.

Prieto agrega que el reclutamiento y la retención de cuidadores es uno de los mayores problemas del sindicato.

"Si no les pagan lo suficiente, por supuesto que seguirán adelante y buscarán algo diferente, y siempre hay una gran rotación," enfatizó también la entrevistada.

Prieto asegura que los cuidadores están comprometidos con su trabajo y se aseguran de brindar a sus clientes la atención que necesitan.

"Solo porque amamos a nuestros clientes y queremos seguir haciendo este trabajo, no significa que no merezcamos tener una vida digna para nuestras familias y para nosotros, para cuidarnos nosotros mismos," insistió además Prieto.
