Tomorrow marks the Inflation Reduction Act's second year anniversary, and Nevada climate and clean energy advocates contend the piece of legislation has improved the quality of life for Nevadans, despite facing criticism and threats from those opposed to the measure.

Nevada Assemblymember Howard Watts III, D-Las Vegas, is one of many who say the IRA has helped make energy-efficient home and business improvements more affordable, helping folks save money and the environment. He also says in the two years since the IRA became law, it has spurred more than 20,000 jobs, $14.5 billion in new and private investments, and led to 16 clean energy projects to date in the Silver State.

"So I think it is important to kind of recognize the incredible progress we've made and at the same time we got a lot more that is still to come and there is a lot to be excited about, you know, coming out over the next year or so," Watts said.

Watts added more information on incentives, rebates and tax credits are available through the nonprofit Nevada Clean Energy Fund. He also recommends Rewiring America's Personal Electrification Planner and the IRA Savings Calculator as easy to use tools.

Michelle Hamilton, Reno resident and community organizer with the environmental grassroots organization Citizens' Climate Lobby, said she and her husband have long cared for the environment and have taken advantage of the IRA's benefits to electrify their more mature home. She argues electrifying a home doesn't have to be a difficult undertaking.

"To get over the concerns, the important thing is to have a plan, to realize that you're not going to do it overnight and that you can time your purchases for when your existing equipment is going to need to be replaced anyway," she said.

Hamilton added things are different for new homes compared to older ones, and urged anyone building a new home to make it "electric friendly," meaning it should have an electrical panel that can support things like EV charging, an electric stove, or clothes dryer.
