This is a National Day of Action for workers at the U.S. Postal Service. Mississippi postal workers are among those rallying to demand that Postal Service management address their concerns.

The Postal Service delivers mail and packages to nearly 165 million addresses nationwide.

George Collins, president of the Mississippi Postal Workers Union in Biloxi, said today, they'll be having conversations with the customers to discuss how they can provide better service and prevent issues with mail delays.

"The main point about this that we have to emphasize is to inform Congress, inform our senators, that Resolution 277 within the House states that they need to restore the service to the July 2012 standards, where local mail is delivered the next day," he explained.

Postmaster General Louis DeJoy's 10-year strategic plan, known as "Delivering For America," outlines plans for 91% on-time mail deliveries. But Collins pointed out that DeJoy has restructured the agency to make changes and eliminated first class package mail, but introduced Ground Advantage, and said the ground advantage computer program gives customers a false expected delivery date.

As the general election approaches, some states are worried their mail-in ballots might be delayed due to Postal Service issues. Collins said DeJoy is supposed to be providing virtual election mail training to management and union representatives.

"We make sure that when election mail is found, it is segregated and moved expeditiously. And we will have somebody representing the APWU that will be monitoring election mail at the Gulfport processing plan to make sure when it arrives and that it's moved quickly," Collins continued.

He explained the importance of local post office staffs sorting any incoming mail for election-related items on the same day it's received, and said that separating this mail will help with getting it sent to the main processing plants for faster distribution.
