Hoy es el último día que los habitantes de Kentucky pueden registrarse para votar en las elecciones presidenciales del próximo mes. La votación también incluirá dos enmiendas constitucionales y contiendas legislativas y del Congreso. Los residentes pueden verificar su estado de votación en "vote.ky.gov" o devolver una tarjeta de registro de votante a la oficina del secretario del condado local antes de las 4 p.m., hora local. Wendolyn Gray trabaja en el empoderamiento de los votantes con Kentuckians for the Commonwealth. Ella dice que está dedicada al tema después de perder su propio derecho a votar por un delito grave no violento en el pasado. Gray agrega que ahora se dedica a garantizar que todos los habitantes de Kentucky tengan lo que necesitan para ejercer su derecho al voto.

"Estoy tratando de construir un legado para mis hijos y nietos, ya que yo no tengo el poder de votar. Si podemos tener eso colectivamente en nuestras mentes, que tenemos el poder, podemos lograr un gran cambio," enfatizó además Gray.

Las elecciones generales son el martes 5 de noviembre. La votación anticipada se realizará del 23 al 25 de octubre. Los votantes registrados pueden votar en ausencia si cumplen con ciertos criterios y no pueden votar durante el período de votación anticipada o el día de las elecciones. La fecha límite para solicitar una boleta de voto ausente es el 22 de octubre.

Gray argumenta que después de cumplir su periodo provisional y completar la restitución, puede comenzar el proceso para restaurar sus derechos de voto.

"Luego, puedo solicitar individualmente obtener un indulto del gobernador, eso requiere algo de tiempo y algo de dinero," enfatizó también la entrevistada.

En 2019, el gobernador Andy Beshear firmó una orden ejecutiva que restablece los derechos de algunas personas con condenas por delitos graves anteriores que han cumplido su sentencia completa. Según la ACLU de Kentucky, aproximadamente 175.000 habitantes de Kentucky con condenas por delitos graves son elegibles para votar.
