Grupos presentan demanda para reabrir registro de votantes en FL en medio de huracanes

Mientras el huracán Milton toca tierra y Florida se recupera de la devastación causada por el huracán Helene, grupos defensores del derecho al voto han presentado una demanda para reabrir el periodo de inscripción de votantes del estado, que finalizó el lunes (7/10).

Aunque no es parte de la demanda, Larry Hannan, de State Voices Florida, expresó su apoyo por los esfuerzos para dar a los habitantes de Florida más tiempo para registrarse en medio del caos causado por los desastres naturales.

"Técnicamente, la fecha límite era el lunes," dice Hannan, "pero me sorprendería que alguien, o muchas personas piensen: "tengo que salir y registrarme para votar" cuando están intentando empacar para irse a otro sitio, sin saber que cuando vuelvan su casa podría no estar habitable."

Grupos de defensa por el derecho al voto, como Southern Poverty Law Center, League of Women Voters of Florida y NAACP Florida State Conference, presentaron una demanda alegando que la negativa del estado a ampliar el plazo de inscripción privaba del derecho al voto a muchos habitantes del estado. Antes del huracán Milton, el gobernador Ron DeSantis emitió una orden ejecutiva que permitía cambios electorales en 10 condados afectados por el huracán Helene, permitiendo ajustes en los lugares de votación anticipada y creando centros de votación.

Hannan dice que, si bien puede requerir cierto esfuerzo por parte del estado, los funcionarios de Florida deberían seguir el ejemplo de Carolina del Sur y extender el plazo de registro a medida que la gente se recupera.

"Se trata de una cuestión de equidad," agrega Hannan, "y creo que afecta a todos los votantes de Florida. No es una cuestión liberal o conservadora. Las personas que llegan a Florida o las que cumplen 18 anos pueden ser liberales o conservadoras."

Florida no es ajena a la necesidad de ajustar los procedimientos electorales después de grandes tormentas. El estado otorgó flexibilidad a los funcionarios electorales, permitiendo la consolidación de los centros de votación tras el huracán Ian en el suroeste de Florida en 2022 y el huracán Michael en el noroeste de Florida en 2018.
