Aumenta empleo para residentes de Iowa con discapacidades, aún quedan obstáculos

Datos estatales muestran que cada vez hay más ciudadanos de Iowa con discapacidades que tienen empleo.

Y los defensores del Consejo de Discapacidades del Desarrollo de Iowa señalan que, durante este Mes Nacional de Concientización sobre el Empleo de Discapacitados, el aumento es positivo, pero los obstáculos prevalecen.

Las últimas cifras muestran que casi 91,000 habitantes de Iowa con discapacidades están empleados, la mitad de ellos al menos de tiempo parcial.

Kristine Graves es una de esas personas. Atiende los teléfonos de Iowa Warm Line, un servicio para personas que necesitan hablar con alguien, pero no se enfrentan a una crisis de salud mental inmediata. Graves dice que, aunque tener un empleo le da un propósito, hay un inconveniente.

"La parte del dinero supone una barrera para obtener los servicios que podrías necesitar, porque estas ganando más dinero," dice Graves. "No te dieron ese tiempo, y es como si te dijeran: "Te daremos seis meses para liberarte". Lo hicieron de la noche a la mañana."

Los datos estatales más recientes muestran que el 6% de la fuerza laboral de Iowa vive con algún tipo de discapacidad.

Alex Watters, tetrapléjico y miembro del ayuntamiento de Sioux City, es también director de participación de exalumnos alumnos en la Universidad de Morningside.

Watters afirma que la cuestión de la elegibilidad para los beneficios mantiene a algunas personas calificadas fuera de la fuerza laboral. Ha tenido que limitar la cantidad de trabajo que puede aceptar, lo que dice que afecta su movilidad ascendente.

"He tenido que rechazar aumentos," explica Watters. "He tenido que rechazar nóminas de la ciudad u otros organismos, rechazar conferencias... todo porque si supero el límite de ingresos, pierdo todas mis prestaciones. Y entonces me quedo atrapado y me veo obligado a pagar de mi bolsillo, lo que se traduce en decenas de miles de dólares al año."

La Ley de Estadounidenses con Discapacidades garantiza la igualdad de oportunidades en alojamiento público, instalaciones comerciales, transporte y empleo.
