La falta de diversidad en el campo médico es un gran problema. Los datos muestran que menos del 6% de los médicos activos en los EE. UU. son negros y menos del 7% son hispanos, por lo que Cedars Sinai Medical Center está trabajando para diversificar su campus a través de diversos programas.

El programa Next Generation Healthcare Pathways de Cedars ofrece una pasantía remunerada de diez semanas. La directora del programa, Daniela Villegas, dice que el programa DISCOVER expone a los estudiantes universitarios a una variedad de carreras posibles.

"Nos gusta permitirles aprender observando, tener mentores, establecer contactos en todo el centro médico y poder ver si la atención médica es su pasión," insistió la entrevistada.

Puede completar un formulario de interés en el sitio web de Cedars Sinai Next Gen. Los estudiantes escuchan a profesionales en una variedad de campos, no solo médico y enfermería, sino también trabajos que no requieren de 5 a 10 años de capacitación, como técnicos en radiología, flebotomistas, administradores y más.

Una vez que completan el programa DISCOVER, el siguiente paso es el programa ELEVATE, que ofrece un puesto de un año mientras terminan la carrera.

Villegas alienta a los estudiantes a apuntarse en el programa Next Gen, incluso si no saben qué quieren hacer después de graduarse.

"Por eso siempre nos gusta no centrarnos únicamente en los estudiantes de 4.0. Realmente nos gusta abrir las puertas a cualquiera que quiera venir a aprender, experimentar en equipo y tener la experiencia práctica. Y nuevamente, Cedars Sinai es enorme y hay una carrera para todos," argumentó también Villegas.

Cedars también tiene un programa de desarrollo de empleo juvenil de dos años para estudiantes de secundaria en asociación con Fairfax High que paga salario mínimo y cuenta para el crédito escolar.
