La inscripción en el programa 21st Century Scholars de Indiana ha aumentado, alcanzando niveles récord.

La Comisión de Indiana para la Educación Superior informó que el programa ha inscrito a más de 90,000 estudiantes para 2027 y 2028, más del doble de las cifras anteriores. El aumento se debe a una ley de 2023 que permite la inscripción automática de los estudiantes elegibles.

El representante estatal Earl Harris, demócrata de East Chicago, fue el autor del cambio. Espera que ayude a más estudiantes de bajos ingresos a acceder a una educación universitaria libre de deudas si cumplen con los requisitos académicos.

"Hay mucha gente que no sabía que existía," asegura Harris. "Cuando me preguntan sobre formas de financiar la educación de sus hijos, les menciono 21st Century Scholars y casi el 100% de las veces la persona me mira y dice: "¿Qué es eso?"."

El programa 21st Century Scholars se creó en 1990. Ofrece educación universitaria gratuita en instituciones de Indiana de dos y cuatro años, para estudiantes que reúnen los requisitos en función de sus ingresos. Los estudiantes que reúnen los requisitos para participar en el Programa Nacional de Almuerzos Escolares quedan inscritos automáticamente, aunque pueden optar por no participar. Para permanecer en el programa, deben cumplir con ciertos estándares académicos y de conducta.

Harris felicitó el éxito del programa y se mostró optimista respecto a la ampliación de los esfuerzos educativos bipartidistas.

"Creo que, como estado, debemos hacer todo lo posible para ayudar a nuestros jóvenes a continuar su educación después de la preparatoria," dice Harris. "Sabemos que la financiación es un gran obstáculo, y 21st Century Scholars es una excelente manera de garantizar que esos fondos estén disponibles."

Los funcionarios de educación del estado dicen que más de 50,000 estudiantes se inscribieron para 2028, con un adicional de 46,000 para 2027. Antes de la inscripción automática, las inscripciones oscilaban entre 16,000 y 19,000 estudiantes.
