Hoy se conmemora el cumpleaños del difunto reverendo doctor Martin Luther King Junior, reconocido a nivel nacional.

Es un día para que los estudiantes universitarios de Tennessee reflexionen, se unan como comunidad y tomen medidas en Knoxville.

Clarence Vaughn, director de la Facultad de Negocios Haslam de la Universidad de Tennessee, dice que los eventos en Knoxville y en el campus honran el impacto de King al mismo tiempo que fomentan la participación comunitaria y construyen unidad en la comunidad.

"Nos asociamos con la Universidad de Tennessee," dice Vaughn, "principalmente porque queremos crear un sentimiento de comunidad y pertenencia para todas las comunidades de Knoxville y sus alrededores, para asegurarnos de que sepan que el campus es un lugar abierto a actos que apoyen el legado del Dr. King."

Vaughn dice que el segundo almuerzo anual de premios al liderazgo Thomas "Tank" Strickland en la universidad rinde homenaje a empresas influyentes y líderes defensores con más de 600 asistentes.

Por su parte, el Centro Clay and Debbie Jones de la UT organiza las Jornadas de Servicio MLK Jr. del 27 de enero al 7 de febrero, centradas en el voluntariado comunitario en Knoxville.

La doctora Maxine Davis, de la Comisión Conmemorativa del Doctor Martin Luther King Junior, dice que organizan una serie de eventos de una semana de duración para honrar el impacto de King. Dice que hoy se celebra el Servicio de Homenaje en la Iglesia Overcoming Believers. Es un servicio tradicional con miembros de la comunidad y estudiantes.

"Nos gusta mucho incluir a los jóvenes en ese servicio, y este año, Jack y Jill también estarán representados nuevamente," agrega Davis. "Tenemos un coro de celebración de las fiestas de MLK, y luego entregaremos premios durante este servicio también."

Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated, es una organización de madres e hijos afroamericanos centrada en el desarrollo del liderazgo.

Davis señala que el reverendo doctor Harold Middlebrook, presidente emérito de la Comisión Conmemorativa Doctor Martin Luther King Junior y antiguo colega de King durante el movimiento por los derechos civiles, dirigirá a los asistentes cantando <> y pronunciará la bendición.
