Nueva ley ampliaría beneficios alimentarios a residentes indocumentados en OR

Ante el aumento del hambre en todo el estado, la nueva legislación estatal ampliaría las prestaciones de asistencia alimentaria para niños y adultos mayores indocumentados.

Según datos recientes, uno de cada seis niños en Oregón y el suroeste de Washington sufre inseguridad alimentaria, y los índices aumentan el doble en las comunidades rurales.

El proyecto de ley Food for All Oregonians forma parte de un paquete más amplio de justicia para los migrantes, respaldado por una coalición de más de 155 organizaciones.

Andrea Vanessa Castillo, de Oregon Latino Health Coalition, forma parte del comité directivo.

"A pesar de trabajar en granjas que cultivan gran parte de los alimentos del país, los miembros de la comunidad latina enfrentan barreras que perpetúan estos ciclos de inseguridad alimentaria," explica Castillo.

El proyecto de ley crearía un nuevo programa administrado por el estado similar al Programa Federal de Asistencia Nutricional Suplementaria, o SNAP, dirigido por el Departamento de Servicios Humanos de EE. UU.

Castillo señala que los datos de 2023 del U-S-D-A muestran que casi una cuarta parte de los hogares latinos se enfrentan a la inseguridad alimentaria. Castillo agrega que este proyecto de ley tiene como objetivo prevenir los problemas de salud que surgen al no tener acceso a alimentos saludables o tradicionales.

"Queremos que la gente llegue a este espacio brindándoles acceso a alimentos que no solo les dé alegría al comer, sino que contribuya a su nutrición de una manera muy específica desde el punto de vista cultural," dice Castillo.

El Banco de Alimentos de Oregón registró un récord de visitas el año pasado en todo el estado, un aumento de más del 30 % con respecto a 2023. Solo los niños y adultos mayores calificarían para recibir asistencia alimentaria según el nuevo proyecto de ley, y la coalición espera ampliar los beneficios a todos los habitantes indocumentados de Oregón en el futuro.
