Awareness builds in MN about possible ICE activity in schools

Information is flowing through Minnesota schools about the best way to handle new federal immigration policies as enforcement ramps up under the Trump administration.

Webinars, meetings and other forms of outreach are happening after the Department of Homeland Security revoked "sensitive location" status for schools, churches and hospitals, paving the way for ICE agents to enter the sites.

Carlos Mariani Rosa, executive director of the Minnesota Education Equity Partnership, said administrators are being encouraged to adhere to policies to limit chaos and traumatic situations. He pointed out it is not just an in-person interaction.

"Requests for particular data on individuals or students for instance, or student's families, there are federal laws that govern the distribution and access of data," Rosa explained.

At the same time, he emphasized they have to ensure accurate details are being shared among community members, so rumors do not deter families from sending their kids to school. Advocates are reminding parents all children, regardless of immigration status, have the right to equal access to education, which, through the Family and Education Rights and Privacy Act, cannot be taken away.

Gaby Pacheco, president and CEO of TheDream.US, a national scholarship fund for undocumented students, describes the stress children are facing today as "unimaginable." But she added now is not the time to back down.

"Immigrants are the easiest group to blame, the last ones to (get) help and the first to be discarded," Pacheco contended. "We've seen it time and time again, and yet our children - our immigrant children - continue to dream."

Data from the American Immigration Council show roughly 40,000 U.S. citizen children in Minnesota are living with at least one undocumented family member.

President Donald Trump's border czar, Tom Homan, has said any potential activity at schools would be assessed on what he calls a "case-by-case basis," and determined based on national security or public safety threats.
