Los distritos escolares de Texas están lidiando con formas de mantener a los niños migrantes seguros y comprometidos en clase ahora que la administración Trump ha hecho posible que los agentes de ICE ingresen a lugares sensibles en busca de inmigrantes indocumentados. Según el Pew Research Center, en Texas viven 1.6 millones de inmigrantes ilegales. El presidente de la Federación Estadounidense de Maestros, Randi Weingarten, dice que cuando los agentes de ICE entran a las aulas, todos los estudiantes quedan traumatizados.

"Los abogados le dirán esto: Todos los niños, independientemente de su estatus migratorio, tienen derecho a igualdad de acceso a la educación y, a través del Family Education Rights and Privacy Act, no se les puede quitar," insistió además Weingarten.

Durante el primer mandato del presidente Donald Trump, los miembros de la junta escolar de Dallas aprobaron una resolución que designaba a todas las escuelas de Dallas como "acogedoras y protectoras con todo el peso de la ley".

Muchos distritos escolares de Texas han emitido declaraciones diciendo que su compromiso es servir a todos los estudiantes y que no recopilan información sobre el estatus migratorio. Gaby Pacheco, de TheDream.US, un fondo nacional de becas para estudiantes indocumentados, dice que los legisladores siempre utilizan a los inmigrantes como moneda de cambio.

"Sé y veo el juego que jugarán: el divide y vencerás. Nos dirán que solo podemos defender a algunos niños y no a todos. Dirán que nos quitarán parte de la financiación si protegemos a los otros niños. Nos pondrán unos contra otros, con la esperanza de que perdamos de vista lo que es correcto." enfatizó también Pacheco.

Weingarten envió una carta a Trump pidiéndole que rescinda el mandato de Seguridad Nacional que permite a los agentes de ICE entrar a escuelas, hospitales y lugares de culto.
