Los educadores expresan su indignación por los despidos masivos de la mitad del personal del Departamento de Educación de EE. UU. La secretaria de Educación, Linda McMahon, afirma que la medida refleja el compromiso del departamento con la eficiencia y la rendición de cuentas.

Carl Williams, vicepresidente del American Federation of Teachers, representa a los empleados clasificados en Lawndale. Le preocupa que esto provoque recortes en los fondos para la educación especial, y dado que los niños aún necesitan servicios, los distritos tendrán que buscar los fondos en otra parte.

"Si no recibimos los fondos que normalmente obtendríamos del Departamento de Educación, los distritos tendrían que buscar la financiación por su cuenta," explica Williams "y, al hacerlo, probablemente se producirían despidos y una reducción de los servicios para nuestros alumnos mas necesitados."

Williams dice que cualquier despido podría tener un impacto desproporcionado en empleados clasificados como auxiliares de educación especial, conductores de autobús, secretarias, conserjes y trabajadores de servicios de alimentación.

McMahon prometió que el departamento seguiría cumpliendo con financiación, préstamos estudiantiles, Becas Pell, subsidios para estudiantes con necesidades especiales y la concesión de subvenciones competitivas.

Williams dice que los esfuerzos de reducción de costos de la administración Trump podrían realmente perjudicar a las ciudades pequeñas, donde el distrito escolar es a menudo el mayor empleador.

"El Departamento de Educación es crucial para la educación de los estudiantes estadounidenses, y no podemos realizar esta labor con menos dinero," asegura Williams. "Mi madre diría que esto es cortarnos la nariz para fastidiarnos."

Los despidos también eliminarán siete de las doce oficinas regionales responsables de investigar denuncias de violaciones de derechos civiles.
