The Trump administration's effort to eliminate the U.S. Department of Education is facing strong opposition from the Pennsylvania State Education Association, which called it unacceptable.

The mass firing of 1,300 employees is seen as part of a broader plan to dismantle the department.

Aaron Chapin, president of the association, said Pennsylvania educators and support staff are concerned about the effect the firings would have on public education. He pointed out the potential loss of Pennsylvania's $1.6 billion in federal education funding would deeply affect the state's most vulnerable students.

"Six hundred million of that goes to our Title I schools," Chapin pointed out. "Almost $400 million goes to special education programs. About 20% of our students in Pennsylvania receive special education services."

Chapin emphasized federal funding supports the jobs of nearly 7,000 Pennsylvania educators and support staff and losing it would send class sizes soaring. He added it would jeopardize special education services and hurt communities.

Chapin noted parents worry their children need more support, not less, and fear consequences if the agency handling federal funds is dismantled. Educators statewide are urging Senators and members of Congress to address the effects of the firings.

"This Wednesday, across the Commonwealth, school districts are participating in walk-ins, where faculty and support staff are walking into the school as a sign of solidarity," Chapin outlined.

Chapin noted teachers, staff and advocates in Pennsylvania are urging leaders in Washington to act decisively to protect public schools. He emphasized the need for strong federal support to ensure quality education for every student and family relying on federal resources.
