En estos tiempos de división, las organizaciones sin fines de lucro se están movilizando para impulsar la participación cívica facilitando el diálogo intergeneracional. La iniciativa "Creando Ciudadanos" de Commonwealth Club World Affairs de California reúne a adultos mayores y jóvenes para debatir importantes temas cívicos. En enero, el foro se centró en las opiniones de la gente sobre las elecciones de 2024. El próximo foro, en septiembre, abordará el cambio climático. Nesreen Ezzeddine, de Commonwealth Club World Affairs, facilita los eventos.

"El clima político es incierto y, por eso, un diálogo significativo es más crucial que nunca, es decir, acercar esta idea del idealismo de la juventud y también las experiencias de las generaciones mayores," enfatizó Ezzeddine

Ella dice que el club planea patrocinar tres eventos de diálogo intergeneracional el próximo otoño y primavera.

La idea de los diálogos surgió con estudiantes universitarios, quienes expresaron que no planeaban votar porque les decepcionaba que los dos candidatos principales, los presidentes Donald Trump y Joe Biden, tuvieran 78 y 81 años respectivamente. Lauren Silver, vicepresidenta de Educación del Commonwealth Club, afirma que, al mismo tiempo, a los adultos mayores les preocupa este sentimiento de desconexión entre los jóvenes.

"Si no se aborda la brecha intergeneracional, seguiremos hablando en nuestras cámaras de eco generacionales y no vamos a poder curar ni sanar el sistema político ni la división en nuestra sociedad," insistió también Silver.

Heather Smith trabaja con YouthTruth, una organización sin fines de lucro de San Francisco que facilita el diálogo entre estudiantes de secundaria y educadores.

"Cuando los estudiantes se sienten incluidos en estas conversaciones, cuando ven que sus opiniones e ideas se convierten en acciones, los vemos como estudiantes y ciudadanos comprometidos a medida que crecen," argumentó además Smith.

Una encuesta reciente de YouthTruth revela que muchos estudiantes no creen que las escuelas los preparen para participar cívicamente. El 68 % coincide en que ayudar a los demás es importante, pero solo el 44 % siente que puede marcar la diferencia.
