Protestors in more than a dozen New Mexico cities will join thousands nationwide Saturday in what is expected to be the largest single-day protest since President Donald Trump entered office.

From Silver City to Taos, "Hands Off!" demonstrations are rallying those who object to Trump administration policies - including federal workforce layoffs, the handling of Social Security benefits, anti-immigrant and transgender initiatives and more.

"When institutions fail, it's up to the people to become the bulwark of democracy against this authoritarian creep," said Ezra Levin, co-founder and co-executive director of the group Indivisible. "We need peaceful protestors making 'good trouble,' as John Lewis said, in every single nook and cranny of this country."

Demonstrations nationwide will occur between 1 and 3 p.m. Saturday, including at New Mexico's State Capitol in Santa Fe.

Deirdre Schifeling, chief political and advocacy officer for the American Civil Liberties Union, said her organization already has filed 25 lawsuits to push back against the Trump administration.

"I want to say that as critical as these court fights are," she said, "we are ultimately going to have to beat back this administration and defend our rights together in the court of public opinion."

According to Ash-Lee Woodard Henderson, director of Working Families Power, the administration's ground-shaking policy changes are affecting a huge number of Americans.

"You've seen the Trump administration disappearing people, you've seen the tariffs, you've seen all of the threats that he and his administration are making against federal workers," she said. "it's a dire time."

MoveOn executive director Rahna Epting noted the Trump administration's unprecedented number of executive orders, and said the demonstrations are meant to counteract a sense of hopelessness.

"I truly believe what we are doing, all of us coming together," she said, "this is how we will get through this moment. This is how we will push back, and this is how we are going to come back."
