Hoy es el Día Nacional de Decisiones Médicas, un momento para educar a los profesionales de la salud y consumidores sobre la planificación anticipada de la atención médica. Se anima a las personas a expresar sus deseos sobre la atención del final de la vida, por ejemplo, si desean todas las intervenciones médicas posibles o si prefieren cuidados paliativos. Brandi Alexander es directora de participación de la organización sin fines de lucro Compassion & Choices.

"Cuantas más herramientas tengamos y más normalicemos la conversación, podremos empezar a cambiar algunos de los estigmas negativos que conlleva hablar de la muerte," dice Alexander "porque una vez que hablas de ello y sabes que opciones tienes disponibles, entonces realmente puedes defenderte dentro del sistema de salud y así es como realmente creamos el cambio."

Las personas deberían considerar completar una directiva anticipada, a veces conocida como testamento vital, y darle a alguien de confianza un poder notarial para la atención médica, para que pueda tomar decisiones médicas en su nombre en caso de ser necesario.

Las encuestas muestran que el 37% de los adultos negros de California afirman haber sido juzgados o discriminados por parte de los profesionales de salud, lo que puede generar dudas a la hora de hablar sobre los cuidados paliativos.

Zeena Regis, directora de población prioritaria en Compassion & Choices, dice que la planificación anticipada de la atención es menos común en las comunidades de color.

"El 76% de los latinos y el 68% de los adultos negros de California no han documentado sus deseos de tratamiento médico para el final de la vida," asegura Regis.

Como aspecto positivo, los datos muestran que los hospitales de California tienen más probabilidades de tener cuidados paliativos en comparación con el resto del país.
