Legisladores de CA consideran hacer permanente la Ley de Opción de Fin de Vida

La ley de California que legaliza la ayuda médica para morir podría volverse permanente si los legisladores aprueban un proyecto de ley que se encuentra actualmente en la Asamblea Estatal.

El Proyecto de Ley Senatorial 403Ley de Opción de Fin de Vida de 2015. Esta ley permite a los pacientes con enfermedades terminales, con menos de seis meses de vida y en plena capacidad mental, obtener una receta para terminar con su vida.

El defensor Dan Diaz afirma que su esposa, Brittany Maynard, se mudó a Oregón en 2014 para acogerse a la Ley de Muerte Digna del estado.

"Brittany se ha ido, así que ahora estoy luchando por todas las personas con enfermedades terminales que puedan encontrarse en la situación de Brittany, para que no tengan que hacer lo que ella hizo, abandonar su estado natal, después de que le dijeran que le quedaban seis meses de vida," agregó Diaz.

La Ley de Opción de Fin de Vida expirará en cinco años. La ayuda médica para morir es legal en 11 estados y Washington D.C., pero California es la única jurisdicción con una cláusula de caducidad.

Leslie Chinchilla, de Compassion & Choices Action Network, dice que durante la última década no ha habido un solo caso comprobado de abuso que involucre ayuda médica para morir en todo el estado.

"El Departamento de Salud de California elabora un informe anual sobre la ayuda médica para morir. No se ha registrado ningún caso de coerción ni abuso, y la ley funciona según lo previsto," argumentó también Chinchilla.

En 2023, más de 1200 californianos con enfermedades terminales obtuvieron recetas de ayuda médica para morir y el 69 % tomó la medicación.
