Richmond, VA - If, as the song goes, 'This land is your land,' the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) is looking for your input, on the future of the largest National Forest east of the Mississippi. Management plans are being drafted for the next 10 to 15 years for the 1.1 million acre George Washington National Forest, and the current public comment period allows Virginians to voice their thoughts about what should be on the agenda.

Nathan Lott, executive director of the Virginia Conservation Network, says past struggles have centered on how to balance commercial interests, such as logging, with public access for recreation and protection of rare species and ecosystems.

"The most important thing for Virginians to understand is that this is their land, public land that is a resource for all Virginians."

David Hannah, conservation director for Wild Virginia, hopes timber resources will be among the major considerations as the Forest Service drafts the plan. He believes the point should not be a logging ban, but clear limits on any logging activity.

"There are some places we think logging should be off-limits, and we would like to ensure that those areas remain intact and are protected through time."

Public comments on the draft plan are due to USFS by August 8, and meetings will be held throughout the summer and into fall. Details about how to comment can be found online, at www.fs.fed.us.
