Wyoming has at least a dozen reasons to "Step Up for Kids" today. That's how many rallies are taking place across the state to focus political candidates on issues that affect thousands of Wyoming children and their families--issues such as child abuse, health insurance, juvenile justice and poverty.

Deanna Frey, executive director of the Wyoming Children's Action Alliance, says those are the kinds of topics that, too often, are swept under the rug during the political campaign season. Yet, she adds, kids don't have time to waste on their path to successful adulthood.

"We know that that opportunity to become productive adults eludes thousands of children in Wyoming. Those are the kids that are kind of 'hidden children.' They're living in poverty, don't have health care or health insurance; some are young children who are incarcerated. They may be children in out-of-home placements, whether that's with family members or in foster care."

According to Frey, the rallies and discussions have been organized to "step up" the dialogue about how to improve the odds of success for all children. "Step Up for Kids" events are taking place across the nation today; a complete list of those in Wyoming is available online at www.wykids.org.
