El Acoso: Un crimen de alta ocurrencia en Nuevo México

Santa Fe, NM - En los Estados Unidos, una de cada 12 mujeres y uno de cada 45 hombres han sido víctimas de acosadores. Enero es el "Mes Nacional de Concientización del Acoso" y líderes comunitarios en Santa Fe están promoviendo una reunión sobre este tema con autoridades y ciudadanos para el próximo martes 13 de Enero con el fin de incrementar el conocimiento del público acerca del acoso – un crimen bastante común en Nuevo México.

Carol Horwitz, oficial de enlace de violencia doméstica y sexual para la ciudad de Santa Fe, dice que las estadísticas de este crimen en Nuevo México son alarmantemente altas. Menciona que en Nuevo México, solo un tercio de las víctimas reportan el crimen a las autoridades, y menos aún piden protección a la policía.

"En Nuevo México tenemos a un 25 por ciento de nuestras mujeres con historial de haber sido acosadas por lo menos una vez en sus vidas."

Usualmente el acoso lleva a la violencia. Las víctimas de los acosadores muchas veces sienten pena o vergüenza por su situación. Pero Horowitz dice que las víctimas deben recordar que la culpa está con el agresor y la mejor defensa para las víctimas de acoso es hacer el crimen público con amigos, colegas y la policía.

"La víctima necesita documentar y necesita decir a su vecino lo que está sucediendo, necesitar decirle a su empleador y a los miembros de su familia. Esto es necesario para tener protección."
