Albuquerque, NM – El porcentaje de niños nacidos en la pobreza crece a un ritmo impresionante en Nuevo México; y con el declive económico sólo puede esperarse que la situación empeore, en opinión del Children's Defense Fund (Fondo de Defensa de los Niños).

Ed Shelleby, vocero del Fondo, comenta que el organismo analizó la situación de los niños durante el año pasado, y encontró datos preocupantes sobre los pequeños de Nuevo México. Por ejemplo, que el estado ocupa el 4º lugar nacional en cantidad de niños que viven bajo la línea de la pobreza.

"La tasa de pobreza infantil es de más del 25 por ciento, o sea que más de uno de cada cuatro niños de Nuevo México vive de hecho en la pobreza."

Pero más preocupante aún es el hecho de que este reporte, dice Shelleby, cubre sólo parcialmente los efectos del declive económico actual. Con el tiempo se esperan resultados aún más graves.

"El Fondo para la Defensa de los Niños anticipa que los datos del año próximo, especialmente las tasas de pequeños sin seguro y en la pobreza, aumentarán una vez que reflejen de lleno el ambiente económico y los efectos del declive económico."

Hay otros datos preocupantes en el reporte. Dice que en Nuevo México hay 123,000 niños que carecen de seguridad social, además de que el Estado alcanza uno de los mayores índices, a nivel nacional, de madres adolescentes.
