Home Alone – Young Teens and “Tweens” Adrift in Summertime

Albany, NY - School's just about out. Some parents are either absent or overworked, grandparents may be physically limited or overworked themselves, and summer camp or day camp are too expensive, given the sour economy. Ron Rosen sees the effects in his home town, Poughkeepsie: Teens and "tweens" left home alone.

"It's stressful. I hear stories of people leaving their kids home alone at an earlier age than people used to do that, and there's possibilities for getting into problems that way."

Rosen and his wife, who are legal guardians of their eight- and 11-year-old granddaughters, have found a somewhat inexpensive day camp in their town. Other caregiver grandparents or relatives aren't so lucky. Advocates in the field urge them to contact their local social service agency to see if funding exists for day camps or recreational programs.

Brigitte Castellano of the National Committee of Grandparents for Children's Rights says economic tough times have stretched the limits of caregivers' ability to watch young teens and "tweens," and have put summer camps and day camps out of reach for many.

"The young teenagers, the 14-year-olds, the 13-year-olds, are actually now latch-key kids, so they're going to be left alone at home, and we all hope for the best."

Carol Fazio of Port Jefferson Station, Long Island, is 68 and has full custody of her 14-year-old granddaughter. She says despite having to work part-time, she is able to keep the teenager from being left home alone, because she can afford things like music lessons and summer camp.

"You've got to keep them busy. It's a heartache. It really is very, very hard, because at this age, we don't want to do this."

Castellano urges grandparents and other stressed-out caregivers to call their local social service agency about the possibility of day camps, or call her organization for further assistance. The toll-free number for the NCGCR is 1-866-624-9900
