DES MOINES, Iowa - Some of the best developers in Iowa will be honored with a 2010 Best Development Award for projects they have undertaken which reflect smart growth practices. Nominations are being taken now by the group 1000 Friends of Iowa in order to hand out awards in six categories later this year.

The organization's executive director, Linda Gobberdiel, says the awards were established in 2001, and every year they look for projects that show responsible development.

"A new project or something that has been reused as far as a building goes; we're always looking to see if they are sustainable and how the development has been designed and also built."

Gobberdiel says there are awards not just for developments, but for cities, companies and individuals who have done things to benefit the community, the environment and quality of life for future generations.

"They don't have to be a developer to nominate; this can be anyone that knows of a development that they feel needs recognition for what has been done in a way that is sustainable."
