DES MOINES, Iowa – El mensaje que trae el Mes de Concientización de Enfermedades Transmitidas Sexualmente (ETS) es el de hacerse las pruebas. Esta última semana del mes se está haciendo un esfuerzo para que los residentes de Iowa se hagan pruebas de enfermedades e infecciones sexualmente transmitidas. Más de 11,000 personas fueron diagnosticadas en el año 2009 –que es el año en el que se tienen los datos más recientes.

Rhonda Ruby con el Planned Parenthood del Heartland dice que ese número es probablemente más alto ya que muchos casos de infección no son detectados.

"Existen tantas ETS’s que la gente no sabe que están infectados porque sabemos que el 50 por ciento de las ETS’s no presentan síntomas, así que queremos asegurarnos que la gente se haga las pruebas."

Ruby dice que las pruebas se hacen en las oficinas médicas o en las clínicas del Planned Parenthood. Las clínicas ofrecen asistencia en costos por las pruebas dependiendo de tu ingreso. Dice que las personas entre los 15-25 años son las que más importan.

"En verdad es importante que las personas en ese grupo se hagan pruebas, porque sabemos que las ETS’s que serán diagnosticadas serán principalmente en personas de esas edades. Básicamente llama a Planned Parenthood o a tu médico y te pueden ayudar."

Añade que el riesgo de ignorar los síntomas, o no hacerse pruebas, puede resultar en una grave enfermedad a futuro, o impactar la fertilidad.
