Tuesday, June 26, 2012

INDIANAPOLIS - June 27 is HIV National Testing day, and also a reminder that HIV continues to be a public health threat.

Andrea Perez, HIV prevention program manager for the state of Indiana, says just because you don't hear as much about HIV and AIDS these days doesn't mean it's not here.

"The total number of people living with HIV and/or AIDS is just over 10,000. At the end of 2011, it was 10,225."

Perez says the most common transmission source remains men having sex with men. Also on the rise are the number of heterosexual black men and women and Hispanics being infected.

Perez says HIV today is considered a chronic disease that can be managed, not a death sentence as it was regarded 25 years ago.

"We would talk about people taking drug cocktails where they would be taking, you know, literally handfuls of pills multiple times a day. Whereas now, they have come so far in terms of medication and treatment that people are maybe taking one or two pills a day."

The HIV prevention program manager says Indiana has a great system for helping those with HIV and AIDS, starting with a care coordinator.

"What that care coordinator is, is someone who is knowledgeable of the health insurance options that are available for HIV positive people, transportation assistance, an entire host of wraparound services."

To find the nearest testing site, log on to HIVTEST.ORG and type in your zip code.
