Will Indiana Ride the Rail to Economic Prosperity?

INDIANAPOLIS - Next-generation passenger rail transport continues to pick up speed across the nation, and one of the biggest beneficiaries could be the Midwest. Nearly 500 companies in seven states across the region that could profit from rail expansion have been identified in a report by the Environmental Law and Policy Center.

According to Deputy Director Kevin Brubaker, in Indiana there are at least 99 such businesses.

"And that may well be just the tip of the iceberg. The further we dig into this, the more we find small and mid-size firms that can and do create the parts that become part of high-speed locomotives and trains," Brubaker stated. "So, we have the opportunity here in the Midwest to create jobs, revitalize manufacturing, while building the trains for the 21st century."

Of all the firms identified in the Midwest, Brubaker said, about a dozen are original-equipment manufacturers and the other 460 are supply-chain companies, including some that used to supply the automotive industry.

"You know, a train isn't that different than a car. It has everything from glass to fabric to brakes and wheels, HVAC systems," he pointed out. "So, the manufacturing know-how that exists here in the Midwest really can be put to good use in building trains for America."

One Hoosier company identified by the Center, Bo-Mar Industries, has passenger rail experience designing and producing sleeper bunks, stainless steel kitchens and battery boxes. Bo-Mar also patented and fabricated a bicycle storage device for a rail system in Los Angeles.
