SANTA FE, N.M. - Funding for safety efforts at public schools needs to be a higher priority for state lawmakers, according to National Education Association of New Mexico President Betty Patterson. Student safety is again a national topic, after a 12-year-old boy fatally shot his math teacher, Michael Landsberry, at Sparks Middle School in Nevada on Monday. He also wounded two other students before taking his own life.

For the benefit of student safety, Patterson said, legislators in New Mexico and nationwide need to stop cutting education funding.

"In so many states where funding is being cut, that's the first thing that happens. Funding to safety committees, safety officers, resource officers - that's the first thing that is cut. It's the safety of our children; I mean, we have to make sure that they're safe," Patterson said.

President Obama pushed for more gun control after the school shooting in Newtown, Conn., in which a gunman killed 20 children and six adults.

Patterson said resources to treat students with mental health issues are very limited.

"Some counselors in New Mexico in particular are sharing schools, so they may have two or three schools that they go to. So a child with an immediate problem is not going to be seen," she said.
