EUGENE, Ore. – Remember, honor, and teach – those are the goals of the Wreaths Across America program.

This weekend, the organization places wreaths on veterans' graves at Arlington National Cemetery. And volunteers will do the same at 800 cemeteries and veterans' memorials around the country, including a dozen in Oregon.

Civil Air Patrol Capt. Roxanne Cole helps to organize three ceremonies in the Eugene-Springfield area. She says Saturday's events offer a meaningful pause during a hectic time of year.

"We have a lot of programs for the living veterans and that's very important,” she says. “But I think we need to remember the ones that have gone before us, and remember what they did, and why we are the country we are now."

Saturday's wreath ceremonies are open to the public. A listing of all ceremony times and locations by state, along with sponsorship information, is online at WreathsAcrossAmerica.org.

Cole says she hopes the program will continue to grow throughout the state and that more community groups and individuals will consider sponsoring the wreaths, which cost $15 apiece.

"This year, I think we have 120 total, so it's about 30 or 40 per park,” she says. “There are 4,000 veterans' gravesites in these three parks, at least. I would love to have a wreath on every veteran's grave that we could."

It's too late to order wreaths for this weekend, but orders can be placed for next year. People also can bring their own wreaths to a ceremony, but Cole says the ones ordered through the program are shipped from Maine and have particular significance.

"There's ten boughs in each wreath, and each bough means something,” she explains. “And then, the red ribbon is for the blood that they shed. Each wreath is made by hand, and they smell so good."

As the number of sponsorships for wreaths grows, so too does the number of veterans' gravesites. The Veterans Administration estimates that about 600 World War II veterans pass away daily.
