BOISE, Idaho - Idaho law enforcement agencies have stepped up Driving Under the Influence patrols this month. Ninety-six people died in drunk-driving crashes last year, a 32 percent increase over the year before and impaired driving incidents tend to spike during the last weeks of the year.

Jan Withers, national president of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, is encouraging party hosts to intervene if a guest has had too much to drink and is about to get behind the wheel.

"People are hesitant to do that," says Withers. "I used to be hesitant to do that, thinking, 'Oh, I don't want to get involved,' or, 'They're going to be upset with me' but I totally look at it differently now."

The Idaho Transportation Department's Office of Highway Safety estimates almost 45 percent of all fatalities on Idaho's roads and highways were the result of impaired driving last year.

Withers suggests sober transportation options be part of holiday party planning.

"Ideas like phone numbers for alternative transportation, or make plans with their friends on how to get home safely," she says. "A couple of hours before the end of the night, make sure you're not serving alcohol any more."

There were more than 1,400 impaired-driving crashes in Idaho in 2013.
