Friday, September 11, 2015

LAS VEGAS - People across Nevada are being asked to help the hungry in their communities as part of a broader effort to make the Sept. 11 anniversary, which today is a national day of service.

Hilarie Grey, communications director for AARP Nevada, said that about 70 volunteers are helping to pack meals at the Three Square Food Bank in Las Vegas as part of September being Hunger Action Month, but also in recognition of the 9-11 anniversary. She said AARP has long advocated for Sept. 11 to become a national day of service.

"It's been several years now that AARP has made the decision as an organization to dedicate that day," she said, "so our national office in Washington, D.C. - all of their employees participate in service projects, and in state office across the country."

Grey said AARP Nevada has sponsored community-service projects, such as the event at Three Square food bank, in honor of the 9-11 anniversary for several years. September being Hunger Action Month is a natural fit, she said, because one in six Nevadans is considered food insecure, which means he or she doesn't always have enough food to eat.

"For AARP, part of our interest is that so many seniors suffer from food insecurity and go hungry," she said, "and for older people, that can really be the difference between buying food and their prescription medication or keeping the lights on."

Each time AARP organizes an event in honor of Sept. 11, Grey said, there is an overwhelming response from people wanting to volunteer.
