JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — The recent targeted attack on Dallas police in which five officers were killed is responsible in part for a spike in police deaths this year. A biannual review from National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund showed that as of July 20, 67 federal, state and local law enforcement officers have died on the job in 2016 - an eight percent increase from the same period in 2015.

NLEOMF spokesman Steve Groeninger said Missouri has been lucky so far.

"Missouri, fortunately, has not suffered a law enforcement officer fatality during the reporting period,” Groeninger said. "I'll note Missouri did have three law enforcement fatalities last year. "

Despite a rise in deaths in the first half of the year, the report showed that police fatalities have steadily declined in the U.S. over the last 40 years. Most people don't realize what it's like to be a member of law enforcement, Groeninger said.

"A lot of us have struggles at work, or we have challenging commutes to get to the office and get home and whatnot,” he said. "But these men and women face many of those issues, as well as knowing at any time they could be targeted because of what they do and what they represent, being the rule of law. "

Nationally, 32 officers have been killed this year due to circumstances involving a firearm, 24 were killed in traffic-related incidents. The most officer fatalities so far this year occurred in Texas, where 11 officers have died, followed by Louisiana with seven officer deaths.
