Vote Expected This Week on Bill to Fix National Parks

BOSTON -- Congress is expected to vote this week on a bill that would cut in half the maintenance backlog at national parks and other federal sites.

The Great American Outdoors Act also would use the royalties from offshore oil and gas drilling to permanently fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund.

Greg Galer, executive director of the Boston Preservation Alliance, says the U.S. has neglected its historic sites for far too long.

"Places like the Old North Church, or Dorchester Heights where Washington's cannon scared off the British," he points out. "The Charlestown Navy Yard, which is home to the oldest commissioned warship, the USS Constitution, symbols of the very essence of our nation."

Massachusetts' national park sites each year draw almost 10 million visitors who spend nearly $1 billion in local communities, supporting more than 10,000 jobs. However, those sites have a maintenance backlog of $240 million. \

Marcia Argust, who directs The Pew Charitable Trusts' Restore America's Parks campaign, says many of the sites are more than 100 years old -- so repairs are critical and would create needed jobs.

"There's also the need to keep roads safe that visitors access, trails that are eroding," she states. "The Park Service has infrastructure systems that people don't even think about, but water lines, electrical systems, water treatment systems."

The bipartisan bill is about five years in the making. President Donald Trump has indicated that he will sign it.
