PHOENIX, Ariz. - With former President Donald Trump's impeachment trial demonstrating deep divisions in the nation, a new documentary released today presents a powerful look at four Americans attempting to bridge political and racial divides.

Executive produced by TV news commentators Meghan McCain and Van Jones, "The Reunited States" profiles Susan Bro, mother of Heather Heyer, who was killed by a white supremacist at a 2017 rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

At a commemoration for Heather's death, Bro said only after a white woman was killed did white Americans began to see racist violence as a major problem.

"The world went crazy when Heather lost her life," said Bro. "And that's not fair, because so many mothers lose their children every day and we have to fix that. I don't want other mothers to be in my spot. I don't want other mothers to go through this."

The documentary debuted this week and is available on-demand on several streaming services, including Amazon Prime, YouTube and others. It is based on the Mark Gerzon book "The Reunited States of America."

Arizona native Meaghan McCain - daughter of the late Senator John McCain - said she supports the documentary because it showcases people who are trying to enact real change, and it ends on an optimistic note that the nation can heal.

"It's in the spirit of what I love about the country." said McCain. "It's in the spirit of what I always loved about politics, which is, unfortunately, getting fewer and far between right now. And then, there's just so many wonderful stories, and I just think these are people that really deserve the same kind of platforms that Van and I have."

The film also follows Texas natives David and Erin Leaverton, self-proclaimed conservatives who explore the nation's inequalities and conflicts by traveling cross country in a recreational vehicle. Erin said the experience was life transforming.

"I went on this journey to figure out what's causing the problem. And I found out that I'm part of the problem," said Erin Leaverton. "It exposed something in myself that I didn't want to see, that's deeply rooted in all of us - the belief that certain people have more value than others."

A Pew Research Center study illustrates the nation's deep political divide. Polls taken during the 2020 presidential election found nine in 10 registered voters, both Democrats and Republicans, believed a victory by the other party would do "lasting harm" to the country.
