NY Cleaners Head to Philadelphia for Union Contract Rally

Hundreds of New York commercial office cleaners are going to Philadelphia to rally for upcoming contract negotiations. The negotiations for New York City begin in November since the contract expires on December 31st of this year. It would cover 20,000 commercial office cleaners of more than 1,300 buildings in the city.

Luchiana Owens, a porter and cleaner at Port Authority Bus Terminal for 22 years, said working during the COVID-19 pandemic was a scary time for workers.

"It was really stressful just having to be there, like worried about coming to work and going home every day to my family, and just catching COVID," she said. "Like, I didn't catch it, but that was always my scare. But, I was like, I had to go to work, and it was mandated that I went to work. I mean I learned a lot of practices like protocols during the pandemic."

In terms of the negotiations, Owens is looking to ensure her employers maintain a safety first attitude toward the workers. Along with this, she is looking for a fair wage to combat rising inflation across the country. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported consumer prices increased 3% in the last year. The rally will be held in Cret Park at 12:45 p.m.

The pandemic has had a multitude of impacts beyond the safety of office-building cleaners. Denis Johnston, executive vice president and director of 32BJ SEIU, said the shift to remote and hybrid work has affected the workforce.

"I would say a combination of this hybrid work, as well as increased vacancies in some of the commercial markets on the East Coast, have led to cuts in the overall number of cleaners, right? We've already experienced a reduction during the COVID period," he explained.

But, as the world emerges from the pandemic, Johnston noted this workforce is growing stronger once again as people return to the office. He said members of the workforce will continue rallying for a fair wage until their contract negotiations are finalized.
