Thousands of teachers, support staff, school nurses and bus drivers heard from Vice President Kamala Harris> on Thursday at their convention in Houston.

The American Federation of Teachers was the first union to endorse Harris in her bid to be the Democratic presidential nominee after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race earlier this week.

During her keynote speech, Harris spoke about the importance of teachers.

"By nature, you are visionaries," she said. "The work you do is about a focus on the future. You see the potential in every child. You foster it, encourage it, and in so doing you shape the future of our nation."

This was Harris' first trip to Texas since becoming a presidential candidate.

During her speech, Harris was critical of Republicans' stance on public schools, from book bans to Project 2025, and the party's refusal to regulate assault weapons that have been used in deadly school shootings.

"While you try to create safe and welcoming places, where our children can learn, extremists attack our freedom to live safe from gun violence," she said. "They have the nerve to tell teachers to strap on a gun in the classroom."

The vice president was introduced by AFT President Randi Weingarten, who said she has worked closely with Harris and Biden over the last three-and-a-half years and that Harris has her full support.

"They have created the strongest economic recovery in our lifetime," she said. "They've restored integrity to the White House. This is the most pro-labor, pro-worker, pro-family, pro-public education administration in our history."
