A seis semanas de las elecciones, aumenta la preocupación por los intentos de intimidar a los votantes en las urnas, por lo que los legisladores están tomando medidas a nivel estatal y federal.

El martes, el gobernador Gavin Newsom firmó la Ley PEACE, que convierte a California en el primer estado de la nación en declarar explícitamente que portar abiertamente un arma en o cerca de un lugar de votación constituye acoso ilegal.

Sean Morales-Doyle es director del Programa de Derechos Electorales del Brennan Center for Justice, una organización sin fines de lucro.

"Representa algunos principios realmente de sentido común. Todos los votantes, todos los trabajadores electorales, deberían poder participar y administrar nuestra democracia sin intimidación. Y las armas visibles alrededor de nuestras elecciones son intimidantes," enfatizó Morales-Doyle.

Una encuesta reciente de trabajadores electorales del Centro Brennan encontró que el 40% informa haber sido objeto de amenazas, abuso o acoso.

El miércoles, el senador de California Alex Padilla presentó un proyecto de ley para prohibir la portación abierta de armas de fuego en los lugares de votación en todo el país, señalando que el país tiene una larga historia de tácticas de miedo el día de las elecciones.

"Hay personas avivadas por la retórica partidista y las narrativas falsas sobre el fraude electoral que se han encargado de desalentar, como mínimo, o a veces directamente intimidar a las personas para que no dejen que su voz sea escuchada en el proceso democrático," insistió también Padilla.

Ambos partidos políticos planean tener observadores electorales presentes este año. El Centro Brennan ha establecido una línea directa en 866-OUR-VOTE para que las personas informen sobre cualquier intento de intimidar a los votantes o a los trabajadores electorales.
