Defensores de la Educación impulsan grandes cambios bajo la Administración Biden

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Ante la perspectiva de una nueva administración de Biden, varios grupos defensores de la reforma educativa esperan grandes cambios en el 2021.

Ed Honowitz, de Pasadena, director principal del proyecto en la Iniciativa Gestión Labral de California (California Labor Management Initiative), que es parte de la Fundación de Californianos Dedicados a la Educación (Californians Dedicated to Education Foundation); también fue miembro del Consejo Escolar en Pasadena y analista de la educación en la legislatura estatal.

Opina que la prioridad es ayudar a los estados, que han perdido billones durante la pandemia.

"Ciertamente algo de apoyo a los estados para que los distritos escolares tengan un PPE y personal de limpieza adecuados, para los maestros sustitutos."

Mucho depende del resultado de la segunda vuelta del Senado en Georgia, que pudiera volver el Senado al control Demócrata.

El Presidente Electo Biden, cuya esposa Jill es profesora de un "Community College," pidió dos años de colegio comunitario gratuito y cuaro años de matrícula gratis en universidades estatales, para familias de bajos ingresos. Además, él ha dicho que quiere cancelar algunas deudas de los estudiantes y kindergarden universal.

Honowitz dice que le gustaría que el Departamento de Educación retomara los problemas de derechos civiles y de equidad que tuvieron algo de fricción bajo el Presidente Obama, pero fueron desviados o eliminados en los últimos 4 años.

"Hay muchas cosas que se eliminaron con Trump. Cosas como atender las disparidades en suspensión y expulsión, aprendizaje socio emocional, salud mental en la escuela."

Horowitz también cree que los derechos de los trabajadores se han desgastado en los últimos años -- y también espera que Biden procure un enfoque de mayor colaboración para los problemas de administración laboral.
