State Budget Cuts Loom: Many Could Lose Dental Benefits

BOSTON - More state budget cuts are on the way as Gov. Deval Patrick continues to wrestle a $600 million budget deficit, and MassHealth's Adult Dental program could be on the chopping block.

According to the Oral Health Advocacy Task Force at Boston-based Health Care for All, the program provides a wide array of dental services to almost 700,000 of the state's low-income seniors, chronically ill and people with disabilities. That's almost one in ten of the state's neediest residents.

Dr. Stephen Boswell, president of the Boston community health center Fenway Health, says there is a tendency among many to put dental care at the bottom of the health care list, a decision with serious consequences.

"I think there's a general misconception that dental care is not one of the essential types of health care that people need, but dental care is critical to good health."

In fact, says Boswell, dental disease is related to a variety of other illnesses, including heart disease and diabetes; if left untreated, dental problems can even lead to death. If cuts are made to the Masshealth Adult Dental program, he predicts a rise in the numbers of patients, some with illnesses that could have easily been prevented.

"We expect that we will see a lot more in the way of complications associated with dental disease in our HIV-positive patient population, relatively quickly. Good dental care is what prevents a lot of serious complications."

The governor's office is expected to announce details of the state budget cuts by week's end.
