The Easter Bunny is Not a Pet

NEW YORK - Don't give children unexpected pets for Easter. That's the message from the Humane Society each year around this time.

Adam Goldfarb, the director of the Society's "Pets at Risk" program, says generally people are getting the message that baby chicks aren't good house pets, but many parents still give their kids cuddly little baby bunnies at Easter. And that's where the problems begin, he warns.

"They might have a very cute Easter, but unfortunately the novelty of having a rabbit, and the reality of caring for it long-term, kind of wears off."

Experts caution New York consumers that impulse buying can also happen with everyday house pets like cats and dogs, so it's best to think in the long-term about how any pet purchase will mesh with your lifestyle.

At the Dutchess County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), executive director Joyce Garrity says bunny rabbits may be fluffy and small in the store, but New Yorkers who buy them are buying into a long-term commitment.

"Like any other animal, they require a great deal of care. They live 10 years or more with veterinary care - and they do require veterinary care - and they require a special diet."

Garrity is also a grandmother, and she has answers for all those relatives out there who are tempted to arrive on Easter Sunday with a rabbit as a present.

"You can make yours chocolate, or I give my grandchildren stuffed bunnies from the toy store for Easter."
