Petition Effort Is Aimed At Legalizing Marijuana In Nevada

RENO, Nev. - In a couple of years, Nevadans may have the opportunity to vote on the issue of legalizing marijuana. Joe Brezny, among the organizers of the "Campaign to Regulate Marijuana," said they hope to collect the more than 100,000 qualified signatures needed to get the issue on the November 2016 election ballot.

He pointed to state and national polling that shows the majority of Nevadans and Americans now support legalizing and taxing marijuana.

"It's becoming more certain every day," Brezny said. "The polling in Nevada is consistently a point or two above the polling nationwide. So we're looking at support here that's been growing for 20 years. The likelihood of passage, it seems pretty strong."

Brezny cited polls that show more than 50 percent of Americans support legalizing marijuana. President Obama said earlier this year that he believes marijuana is no more dangerous than alcohol.

Nevadans also can look at the states of Colorado and Washington, where marijuana legalization has not led to more chaos and crime, he said, noting that marijuana sales in Colorado of about $1 million a day are generating about $1 million a week in tax revenue for the state. New money could help Nevada schools, too, he said, and legalization could bolster the state's tourism-dependent economy.

"I really think it opens up an opportunity for education funding that we haven't tapped into. It opens up an opportunity for additional tourists who would come here specifically for that purpose. It can be a net positive to the community in a lot of ways," he said.

He added that the state could also save millions of dollars every year in court, police and incarceration costs linked to marijuana charges.
