Close to 3,000 city leaders from across the country were in Washington D.C. this week for the National League of Cities' Congressional City Conference.

Sparks City Councilman Donald Abbott attended the event to meet with federal officials and learn about federal funding programs.

It was his first time attending this conference, and Abbott said he's always excited to talk with other elected leaders.

"People are coming out with solutions on how they're spending their ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) money," said Abbott. "I think that is the best part, is taking other people's ideas - there is no need to reinvent the wheel completely - and bring those back to Sparks."

Abbott said while the number of constituents local and federal leaders represent is different, he said he views opportunities such as the Congressional City Conference as a way for messages and concerns to be more effectively heard and addressed.

Abbott said he is eager to discuss multiple infrastructure projects for his city and region with congressional officials.

He said some of the things the city is looking to do is expand a landfill and increase transportation corridors as population in the area is expected to increase significantly in the coming years.

"If anyone is familiar with Tesla and Panasonic, that is just east of the city of Sparks," said Abbott. "And we have 25,000 people working there now, and in a couple more years it's closer probably to 50 (thousand). Everyone drives down this I-80 corridor, where it is just a two-lane road each way."

Abbott said other issues impacting Nevada cities and others across the country relate to homelessness, affordable housing and the opioid crisis.
